Description
If you love Art Deco era stuff, you will want this very rare vintage item!Up for auction is a wood poker chip box with a distinctive Art Deco style “skyline scene” lacquered with paint using Dupont Duco finish. It is thought that Donald Deskey had some involvement with these boxes. This labeled “PK-20” box version is painted “red over black.” (Other versions (labeled PK-20A) are painted “black over red.”)
The wooden box is sound; none of the wood is cracked, and all the joints are solid. Please review the pictures, which disclose the degree of wear (rubbing marks, chips to the paint, etc.) to the box surface. The hinge and screws are tight.
The current owner has used this box as a decorative item for the past 50 years. Though related to the noted George H. Devol (author of “Forty Years A Gambler On The Mississippi”), he is not a gambler, but he does like Art Deco items and the sound that the chips make.
We do not know what type of poker chips were sold with the box when it was new, but this box contains 383 unmarked chips, which appear to be a combination of two sets of chips- 303 thinner clay chips (82 medium blue, 62 light red, 25 yellow and 134 white) and 80 thicker clay chips (20 dark blue, 21 darker red and 39 white).
The pictures show the removable chip tray.
Please note that the box can contain 4 decks of cards (No. 92 Club Special Bee Playing Cards fit the slots nicely).
Please also note the copper plate on the interior box top.
Size: 11" wide; 4.75" high; 7.75" deep.
